How to Set Up & Use the Board SMS Inbox

Open your board and click the Board SMS Inbox tab

From any monday.com board that has SMS to Board installed, click the Board SMS Inbox view tab at the top of your board. This opens the inbox panel for that board.

💡 If you don't see the tab yet, add the view by clicking + next to your board views and selecting Board SMS Inbox from the installed apps.

Browse and select a contact to open their thread

The left panel lists all contacts (senders) who have sent a message to any of your reserved numbers. Each contact shows their phone number, latest message preview, and time. Click any contact to open the full conversation thread on the right.

💡 Use the Search contacts… box at the top to instantly find a contact by name or phone number.

Filter contacts by category

Use the Categories dropdown at the top of the contacts panel to filter by category tags such as Support, Sales, Billing, VIP, and more. This lets your team focus only on the conversations that matter to them.

Edit contact details — name, tags & description

Click Contact details at the top right of any open conversation to open the contact editor. You can set a display name, assign category tags, and add a free-text description. Click Save when done.

💡 Giving contacts a display name (e.g. Support Worker) makes them easy to identify across the inbox and in search results.

Reply to a conversation

With a conversation open, type your reply in the Write a reply… box at the bottom of the thread. Click Send SMS to deliver your message immediately. The reply appears in the thread as a sent message with a read/delivery indicator.

💡 The character counter (0 / 1600) shows how much of your message quota you're using. Standard SMS is 160 characters; long messages are split and stitched automatically.

How to Set Up & Use Item SMS thread

Go to the Reserved Numbers dashboard and click Edit on a number

Open the SMS & Numbers Dashboard and navigate to the Reserved Numbers tab. Find the phone number you want to configure and click Edit to open the Edit Phone Number modal.

Enable conversation view and configure column mapping

Inside the Edit modal, scroll down to the Column Mapping section. Map your SMS fields to board columns (Sender, Text, Date, Attachments). Then check the Enable conversation view checkbox to activate threaded conversations inside item views.

💡 When conversation view is enabled, follow-up SMS from the same phone number will be added to the existing item's conversation instead of creating a new board item every time.

Open a board item and click the SMS thread tab

Navigate to your board and open any item that was created from an incoming SMS. Inside the item view, click the SMS thread tab (next to Updates, Files, and Activity Log). The full conversation history for that contact will load immediately.

💡 The SMS thread tab shows the phone number, status (Active/Inactive), provider, message count, and a Refresh button at the top of the panel.

Read the conversation context and reply directly

The conversation panel shows every incoming and outgoing message in chronological order, grouped by date. Attachments (images, files) are displayed inline. Type your reply in the Write a reply… box and click Send SMS to respond to the customer without leaving the item.

💡 Attachments sent via SMS (such as images) are shown inline in the thread and also automatically uploaded to monday.com Files if you mapped an Attachments column.
